The USUS team

Seven people, from six different countries with more than eight different opinions - is the team that created the USUS project. We all have a journalistic background and have taken the Global Electronic Journalism course at JMK, the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at Stockholm University, Sweden. We joined this course to learn the professional way of using the "new" media, the Internet, for journalistic purposes. Time flies and we have to face the future. For journalists it means using the new electronic media for research and publication - be it for print or for broadcasting.

While working with the Internet we have experienced both the possibilities and the limits of computer technologies. Not all journalists will be publishing their articles, TV or radio features online, but for research the Internet will become nearly indispensable and as important as the telephone is at present. The Internet will be a fundamental tool to search for a story, for information, for experts or insiders. Note the word "search" instead of "surf". The difference is to find needed information and contacts in contrast to finding them by accident. The secret is to learn how to exploit the Internet's massive network of information tools.

In order to reveal this secret we created USUS, The Usually Useful Internet Guide for Journalists. USUS is a description of the history and development of the Internet, its construction and elements and an introduction to various techniques for research. Furthermore USUS contains a section of very useful links for journalists. Our main goal was to put up a website which contains all important information about the different elements and how to search them in a professional way. This site is directed towards beginners, journalists who are just starting to use the Internet for research. We hope to provide a useful tool and make it a bit easier for you to exploit the ever growing possibilities of the Internet.

We would like to know your opinion: Klick on the USUS logo and mail us. As the Internet will keep changing, we will have to improve our site. Hopefully we can help you to learn better ways of searching the net.

Meet you some day somewhere on the Internet.
