Yangon
Safely arrived in Myanmar (Burma) today. As expected I cannot access my email-account. The government here is blocking access to almost all web-based email-systems. I suppose they don't want people to be able to communicate anonymously. I think I know how I could overcome the filter-software, but can't be botherered right now. Would take too much time.
I also had great problems accessing my own site even though I'm sitting in a very modern computer-center. The "modern" part stops outsided this room, though: just went to the toilet in this building and you wouldn't believe what it looks like. Maybe I'll take some photos before I leave. Internet-access is quite expensive, btw: The online fee for one hour is 500 kyat - and the average burmese earns something like 10.000 kyat per month! I suppose it's to keep the masses from being able to access outside information. And still - I'm the only foreigner here. Right above me is a sign that reads "Strictly prohibited for any political related and porngraphic site". But apparently this is being taken about as serious as the traffic rules since the guy next to me is looking at pics of naked asian women ;-). Has to cost him a fortune at this rate! well, maybe he is working here.
But enough of my computer-troubles: Before my 30 minutes are up I suppose I should also say some things about Yangon: It is VERY different from Bangkok! It's much noisier and to me it feels like the air is even worse than in BKK. After two hours walking trough Yangon I felt as exhausted as after a day in Bangkok. Another thing is striking: You see almost no tourists. I was walking through the city for a bit and it took more then hour before I saw the first Western or Japanese tourist.
Times up - gotta go....
