Welcome to Margaret River, dude!

The town of Margaret River I'm still in Margaret River, having a pretty good time. The weather keeps oscillating between freezing cold, raining and sunny and warm about every 15 minutes but aside from that it's really cool here. Besides, my car is up and running again - or at least it was yesterday. More »

Drinking wine and leaking fuel

Just had a rather good day, touring the winerys of Margaret River. But I'm still pretty pissed off since I found that my 200 AUD-repair of my cars fuel tank achieved absolutely nothing! When I picked the car up I decided to refuel it and petrol was running all over the pavement just as before. More »

A leaking petrol-tank

A typical dirt-road Just brought my car to the petrol-station to refill and was really surprised that we had used so much petrol yesterday - almost 15 liters per 100 kilometers. Standing besides the car I then discovered that my petrol-tank is leaking - that might explain something. Well, they are gonna look it over now at the garage - bloody trouble these cars, ey? More »

Margaret River: Wines and Kangaroos

Margaret River Just arrived in Margaret River, a small town about 350 km south of Perth. There are basically two things happening here: harvesting wine and surfing. We already saw some surfers on the beach and tomorrow we'll go on a winery-tour. And: I saw my first Kangaroos! More »

Perth - the isolated city

Perth Skyline Since I've been here for a week and not really written a whole lot about what Perth is, like I figured it's about time I did. So here are the basics about Perth, according to the locals the most isolated city in the world. Personally I'd like to disagree with this claim, since imho isolation cannot be determined by distance alone, but it certainly sounds cool. More »

A flat tire and a hairy job

Dammit - I have hardly driven with the car but already got a flat! It turned out I had driven over a nail and understandibly enough the tire didn't like that. Everything worked out fine, though. More »

Better weather, 6.000 Yanks and learning to drive

The U.S.S. Kitty Hawk The weather has finally picked so that I could explore the surroundings a bit with my car and get used to driving on the wrong side of the road (and it is the wrong side, no matter what some people here might say). Today I was in Freemantle (Freo) where the American aircraft-carrier "U.S.S. Kitty Hawk" is currently docked. As a result all of Perth and Freemantle is crawling with sailors on R&R. More »

I'm a lying, fainting car-owner

Yesterday I bought a car! My first car ever! It’s a 1985 Holden Commodore and I hope it will bring me safely from here to Sydney and then up the east-coast! I paid 1.900 AUD, which is really quite good. Not dirt-cheap but o.k. and the car seems to be in good shape. More »

How to buy a car in Australia

I found that buying a car in Australia is significantly more complicated then I had originally assumed! The main problem is that all Australian states issue their own license plates. And if you buy a car from the wrong state in the wrong state, you can be financially truly fucked! More »

A productive day and some embarrassment

I had a really productive day today! Did loads of good and useful things. But first I gotta share a real embarrassment with you. Particularly since it wasn't me who was the most embarrassed :-). More »

What happened to *butter*?

I've just come back from the supermarket. And you won't believe what it says on the package of maccaroni cheese I bought: "Add 1 tabelspoon of polyunsaturated breadspread." I mean, what happened to butter?!?!? More »

First night in OZ

O.k. - so I overspent my daily budget on my first night in OZ. But so what? You can't come to a new country - or a new continent for that matter - and not celebrate that fact! More »

Australia: touch-down, quarantine and culture shock

Hellooo-ooo! I have arrived on the other side of the world! Crossed the some time between 09.35 and 10.00 and I'm now in Perth, Australia! And the first thing I did when I entered this country was to accidentally break their quarantine rules! Ooops. More »

Nocturnal animals and daytime hunting

Parliament of Singapore I only have one day in Singapore. So I did what most tourists do: Go on on the Night Safari at the Zoo, take a walk through the colonial quarter and then end up on Orchard Road to shop, shop, shop. More »

Singapore - the Unreal City

Singapore Just arrived in Singapore - and boy, it's a strange place. I mean, I have heard before that this city is very, very clean. But this really is ridiculous. I mean, it's clean to the point where it looks...fake. More »

"Health days in Bangkok" or "Ouch, that hurts!"

After having been thoroughly impressed with Bumrungrad Hospital at my first visit to Bangkok I decided that it would be a good idea to have myself checked out there at the end of my trip of Asia and maybe get a few more, well, less neccessary things done. After all it's cheap here, right? But jez - why didn't anyone tell me before that it could hurt! More »

Where did all that money go?

Tomorrow I'm gonna leave Thailand and so I figured that this would be a good time to sit down and figure out how much money I actually spent. I know that I spent 615 USD in my month in Myanmar but after that I had lost track. More »

Reality check - Asia

After 3.5 months and at the end of the first continent of my trip I feel it's in order to take a look at the things I set out to do and what became of them. I don't mean the big things, like "Find out what I want to do with my life" but the smaller things that I decided I want to do while away. More »

Full Circle - Songkran in Bangkok

Mari, Ingvill and Me And so I have arrived in Bangkok again; 3.5 months after I left Munich. The timing is pretty apt I think. I arrived in Asia one day after the western "New Year" and I'm leaving Asia on the last day of Songkran, the Thai New Year celebrations. More »

A question of Identity

It seems like I've reached the stage of my trip where I have left the day to day worries of living in the working world far behind. Because all of a sudden I find myself contemplating more, well, philosophical questions, like "Who am I anyhow and what does it mean to be me?". Thoughts that were mainly triggered by a book I've just finished: "The Dice Man" (deutsch: "Der Wuerfler") More »

Timo Lüge - Muay Thai Fighter!

Ah, well, maybe that is a bit exagerrated. A tiny, tiny bit maybe. But I actually did take lessons. I mean a lesson. O.k. one hour. Buy I did give it a try. And it really was a lot of fun. More »

Full moon party on Ko Pha Ngan

Timo and the Swedish twins O.k. guys and girls: I did survive the (in)famous full moon party on Ko Pha Ngan! But unfortuately not everybody can say the same: Four people died. One was shot, at least two stabbed and done girl fell from the back of a taxi and died. Considering that the number of people who were there was approx. 7.000, this is a ridiculously high number. But apparently it's quite normal. More »

Ko Pha Ngan - gearing up to party

Ao Chao Phao Arrived on Ko Pha Ngan yesterday, two days before the (in)famous full moon party. The island really is astounishingly beautiful - a picture-postcard tropical island paradise. But the full moon party is already casting it's shadow and lack of accomodation is the least of the problems! More »

The value of money

One of things that are easy to forget when you are staying in Cambodia, spending ridiculously high amounts of your tourist dollars, is that things are quite different for the people living there. Since I stayed at my hotel for nearly two weeks I was fortunate enough to be able to glimpse a bit of what it is like for the Cambodians working there. More »

New photos from Cambodia

Adorable kids in Siam Reap I finally found the time to edit and upload most of my photos from Cambodia. Some of them are really pretty good. So take a look at them, if you have the time. And if not, take the time! I mean, do you really prefer to go to that meeting? Or rather see strange people and strange places? More »
