Where did all that money go?
Tomorrow I'm gonna leave Thailand and so I figured that this would be a good time to sit down and figure out how much money I actually spent. I know that I spent 615 USD in my month in Myanmar but after that I had lost track.
I simply found it pretty hard to keep track of your money when you have to handle multiple currencies at the same time. Like Kip, Dollar and Baht in Laos or Dollar and Riel in Cambodia. It's just so confusing when you pay for something with, say five USD, and you get your change in Dollar and Baht and Riel or Dollar and Riel or...
So today I went to an internetcafe to have a close look at my bank statements, count the number of traveller cheques I have spent etc. The result was quite shocking! I spent a total of 3235.63 Euros in the 3.5 months I was in Asia. How did that happen!?!?! That is 924,46 Euros per month! That's a lot of money in Asia. And I don't really know where it went! I mean, I know I spent 615 USD in Myanmar. And I'm certain that I spent less in Laos - o.k., let's say 500 USD in Laos. Then where did the remaining 2.929 USD go? Can I have spent that much money in Cambodia and Thailand in just six weeks? I mean, o.k., there are the flights I took, that's about 280 USD in total. And there was the equipment I bought in Phnom Penh (160 USD). Add another, say 2.5 USD/day for internet use (thats 112.5 USD) and we are up to 552.5 USD. That would still mean I spent 52 Dollars a day and that's pretty much impossible - I mean I couldn't possibly have spent that much money on beer and survived. Unless of course I am way wrong about my expenses in Laos. That must be it. I just don't see where all this money went!
What's comforting me is that on the positive side I made 6537.02 Euros while essentially sitting on my ass. Most of this is money I'm owed for holidays I never took last year - so I'll see the last of it this month. So I'm actually ahead 3301.39 USD or I would be if I didn't have to pay for health insureance etc. back home. But even if I deduct that I'd still be ahead - which of course is really, really nice!
And still - I'd really like to know where all that bloody money went!!!

Ever tried to calculate how much beer & drinks you had? In our case, no alcohol had reduced the trip by 20% in cost and 150% in fun.

Actually I can't remember drinking at all! I mean, I woke up every morning with these horrible, throbbing headaches. But I simply don't know where I got them from...
