An inspection for the peace of mind and ridiculously priced internet
Having survived Karijini we travelled to Port Headland, about 400 km north of Tom Price. The trip was uneventful - i.e. we didn't kill or hit anything for a change - but we probably found what must be Australias most expensive internet place.
It's in Munjina in Auski Road House. There they are seriously asking for 5 AUD for 15 minuts of internet use. That's 20 AUD per hour! What the fuck are they thinking??? Even I wouldn't be that desperate to use it at that rate!
In Port Headland I decided to give the car the inspection I didn't have the time to do in Perth. Considering that it has gotten us from Perth to here (about 1.700 km) without much of a grumble I figured I could just as well have it looked at, just to make sure that I don't get stranded on the roads to come. Cause from here on, traffic will be really scarce and repairs will be very, very expensive. Besides I find the thought scary to break down in places that are called "Great Sandy Desert" or the like. Gives me the willies. Fortunately the car was in reasonable shape. The mechanic, who was suggested to me by the hostels manager, charged a very reasonable hourly rate and I don't think he sold me anything I didn't need. It was just minor things, really, and at least I can now be reasonably certain that the car will get me to Darwin - another 2.300 or so kilometers.
I think I mentioned earlied that the cars license plate is from around here somewhere. I found out that it is in fact from Roeburne, just a few kilometers form Port Headland. When I asked the mechanic about it he said that this means that the car was almost certainly owned by a "black fella", i.e. an Aborigini before. Who would have thought?
I also managed to extend the registration until February today, even though it wasn't due until August. This will make it much easier for me to sell the car once I get to the eastcoast.
Off to Broome
Tomorrow morning we'll be off early and drive the 600 km to Broome, where seemingly all backpackers are heading for at the moment. There I'll also split with Esther and Sarah.
