Bushfire on the way to Darwin

On the way to Darwin we passed by a few "controlled" bushfires. Basically these are small fires that are started regularaly to get rid of the undergrowth so that no big fire can develop. I find it a bit hard to understand what's so controlled about it, but it seems to work for them. What we found particluarly odd were the dozens of birds that kept diving into the smoke. I assume they are hunting for insects that are fleeing the trees and plants.
