Overcoming the language barrier
One of my non-german readers remarked last night that it'd be far more interesting to read this blog if the comments were in English. Good point. So please post in English if you can. If you can't I'll translate your comments as good as I can and put the translation under the original. Subtleties might get lost in translation.

I don't know if you received my email (sent to luege@journalist.com) but I'd like to know if 300usd were enough in Myanmar ? I plan to exchange 400usd (no planes, no cars, cheap guest houses)
Thanks for your answer

I really hadn't gotten your email (or overlooked it). I needed 600 USD for one month in Myanmar, including one inland-flight for 90 USD. I doubt that 300 USD will last you since I was watching my money rather closely. 400 USD might be doable.

With most places in the region, the US dollar is still a pretty good thing to carry around. I would suggest you change only what you think you might need and then you can always exchange more along the way at a later date. Or use US dollar. It's sometimes difficult to re-exchange currency, no matter where you are. Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam will not change money back to USD.
