The Best and the Worst
I don't think it's quite time yet to let this blog die for good. There are still a few things I'd like to tell you about my trip, about what I learned etc. Today I'm gonna write something that has been on my mind for a long time. A brief, incomplete list of the best and the worst from my trip.
Most relaxing place: Van Viang, Laos
Cheapest Country: Laos. In the south you can have a bungalow for a dollar a night
Best Food: Thailand
Best beer: Carlton Cold, Australia
Best single meal: The vegetarian Curry we had in the hills of Kalaw, Myanmar,
Best bar: Cafe No Se, Antigua, Guatemala
Countries that amazed me most: Cambodia and Myanmar. Myanmar because it is simply so different from anything else, so removed from the rest of the world. And Cambodia because the people have been through so much and are still so positive about life.
Best photo: The little girl with the bowl of rice
Most uncomfortable trip: The bus to Ngwe Saung
Scariest moments: One night in Antigua one of my housemates accidentally "broke" into my room. Not knowing who he was I kicked him smack into the chest and sent him flying through the room. The other scary moment was when I felt an animal move down the inside of my pants. And of course the when I discovered that the server had a harddisk failure.
Best city: San Francisco
Country with the best-looking local girls: Australia
Place with the best-looking foreign population: Antigua, Guatemala
Best beach: Airlie Beach
Best life on the beach: Ko Pha Ngan
Most overrated event: Full moon party
Best massage: The place across the road from the "Angkor What?" in Siam Reap
Best wildlife: Australia
Most fun week: Volunteering in the Mary River National Park, Australia.
Best National Parks: Karijini National Park, Australia and Yosemite National Park in the USA.
Worst roads: Cambodia
Most interesting days: On the minefields in Cambodia
Most interesting dinner: With the monks and the girl in Yangon.
Most uncomfortable moment with locals: The mafia in southern Laos.
Most uncomfortable moment with other travellers: Breaking up with Sarah and Esther.
Best travel-companions: Rowan, Joni and Rossi from Scotland
Hardest thing I did: Climbing Acatenango in Guatemala
Organization I think you should support: "Camino Seguro", who look after kids in Guatemala Citys garbage dumb.
New hobby: Rock Climbing
Best idea: Going on this trip!
As suggested by Mike, here are a few more things:
Things I regret: I should have taken more chances with the girls I met :-). That might sound weird - and I have received a lot of comments regarding the fact that I can frequently be seen with goodlooking woman - but while I like to flirt I'm always reluctant (read: scared) to take it any further. I should have done that more often when I liked someone. But then again that is the story of my life :-). I also regret that I never went to a massage-school or a cooking-course in Thailand.
Things I would do again: God, there are so many thing! If I had to pick one "activity" then I'd say: Volunteer in a national park!
Things I wish you had time to do: It would have been nice to stay longer at certain places. It would have been nice e.g. to work for a month or two in OZ. I think working somewhere simply gives you a totally different perspective on the country. But since I "only" had four months in Australia that was not an option.
Current comments:
This is a great list. When anyone asks me where they should go on their next trip I'll just send them this URL. "Yeah, here's a guy that traveled around the entire planet, this is what he liked."
You should add a list of items:
Things you regret
Things you would do again
Things you wish you had time to do
Where you would "live" for an extended period of time, given the chance.
Cheers!
Mike
